#5
Daytona Coupe (LeMans 1964, drivers Gurney & Bondurant, painted
Viking
Blue--First
Place, GT III Class). This was the second Coupe completed
and the first completed at Carrozzeria Gransport (Italian for
"Grand Sport Coachbuilders") in Modena, Italy. Competed
in nine FIA races (LeMans, Reims, Goodwood Tourist Trophy, Tour
de France, Sebring, Oulton Park TT, LeMans, Enna, Daytona), won
four times (LeMans '64, Tourist Trophy '64, Daytona '65, Sebring
'65), and driven by Dan Gurney, Bob Bondurant, Maurice Trintignant,
Bernard de St. Auban, Jo Schlesser, Hal Keck, Jack Sears and Dick
Thompson. This CSX2299 condensed history was extracted from Pete
Brock's spectacular book "Cobra Daytona Coupes." Exoto
also replicated this (chassis# CSX2299) car under its #15/Reims--Tour
de France designation.
The
first in Exoto's limited-production Daytona Coupe Collectors
Series. This 1964 #5 Cobra Daytona Coupe was piloted to star
status by track legends Bob Bondurant and Dan Gurney; in 1965
Shelby's Cobra Daytona Coupe wrested the World Manufacturers
Championship from the clutches of Ferrari.
How
do we manage to adequately describe this objet d'art? This
1:18 scale heavyweight (2.lb./0.75
kilogram) Shelby Daytona Coupe by Exoto is one of the very finest
die-cast models we've ever seen. The details are absolutely exquisite,
all the way down to the spokes and Cobra logo on the steering
wheel, the stainless-steel fine-screen vent covers on the front
fenders, the Weber-equipped 289" small-block V8, the accurately-scaled
ignition wiring and battery cables, the Halibrand wheels and the
superbly-detailed Goodyear blue-line tires, the chromed rivets
along the circumference of the tinted rear window. Even the dashboard
gauges are finished to the very smallest details (the gauge needles
are red colored, and even the speedometer's redline mark is indicated).
The doors, the engine cover and the rear hatchback window are
all hinged and operable. This model is a fitting tribute to Pete
Brock's motoring masterstroke. Dimensions: 9.25"
(23.4.cm)
long by 4" (10.cm)
wide.
Don't
take our word for it: here's a report
from AutoWeek magazine, June 22-28, 1998 issue, page 9:

$120
die-cast is a hit!
A new die-cast of the world champion Shelby Cobra Daytona Competition
Coupe was the top-seller for March-April at "Car's the Star,"
a Kansas City (Missouri, USA)-based auto art/gift gallery. It
edged the new Mercedes CLK GTR die-cast.
Gallery
President Philip L. Schroeder said that the highly-detailed Daytona
is the best die-cast he's seen. "I was a bit surprised at
the demand for a $120 die-cast car," he said.

Cobra Daytona Coupe historical footnotes:
1.
The RHS windshield wiper: The only Exoto Daytona Coupe with a
RHS (passenger-side) windshield wiper is the #6 (Amon/Neerpasch)
car... in keeping with the outifitting of the original racing
machines; all
the others currently in production (#5, #15, #26, #56 and #59)
appropriately have no RHS wiper.
2.
Several Daytona Coupe collectors have asked us why the passenger-side
seat of the original coupes (and of the Exoto die-casts) is angled
about 15° or so to the right. I phoned Pete Brock today (24
June 1998) and posed the question to him. His reply: "The
rear wheel wells of The Coupe encroached too far into the passenger
compartment for the seats to fit square; the obvious solution
(of reducing the size of the wheel well to allow the proper attitude
of the seat) was applied for the driver's side only, since in
any event there was no passenger in most competition driving."
There's
your answer, straight from The Coupe's distinguished designer!
