This drivin' machine is not a show car... it's an agile and nimble and blistering-fast open track racer.

You think you can't drive a racecar on the street? When I purchased my Factory Five MkII Cobra some 15 years ago, I bought it for a purpose: to build an open track road race supercar, and one with style. And it was... and still is... very fast. I have fond memories of passing countless Mustangs, Camaros and, yes, even Corvettes.

I would be at the track for a track day event, and when I would come off the track there would be several bystanders waiting for me. They wanted to talk about the car and look it over, not believing someone would put a Cobra (even a replica) onto the racetrack. That has not changed.

Titled and currently registered in the state of Arizona.

UNDER THE HOOD
Ford 342" small-block (5.0L) V8

Engine: 342 cid Ford small-block 'stroker' V8 [4" bore; 3.400" stroke]. Main girdle. Steel crankshaft. Forged pistons. "H" beam rods. Ported aluminum heads.

SS (stainless steel) one-piece valves. F303 Ford Racing hydraulic roller camshaft; aluminum roller rocker arms. Stud girdles. Edelbrock 'Performer RPM' EFI (electronic fuel injection) intake manifold. Remote-mounted oil filter. The engine has logged 3 hours on a fresh overhaul.

Naturally-aspirated, fuel-injected, mass airflow, stock PCM with 42# fuel injectors. 70mm throttle body. 70mm mass air meter. Edelbrock 'Performer RPM,' EFI intake manifold.

Cooling: Ford aluminum Cobra radiator. Spal 17" electric cooing fan; engine oil cooler.

 ignition and electrical particulars:

MSD 'Pro-Billet distributor.' MSD-6AL ignition control. Ford Racing 9mm ignition wires. MSD 'Blaster TFI' ignition coil.

Odyssey PC680 battery; Ford Racing high-speed balanced alternator [90-amp output].

 fuel system:

1993 Ford Mustang fuel tank. 225/liter-per-hour high-volume in-tank fuel pump. Aftermarket high-volume fuel rails. Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator. 3/8 steel fuel line (pressure & return line); AN-6 braided SS fuel hoses as well.

GEAR TRAIN

Bellhousing: QuickTime steel

Gearbox: Borg Warner T5 5-speed transmission. Close-ratio, double-moly gear set.

The gear ratios are: 1st: 2.95:1, 2nd: 1.94:1, 3rd: 1.34:1, 4th: 1.00:1, 5th: 0.63:1. Centerforce clutch (cable actuated).

Rear ensemble: Moser 9" Ford 'floater' rear end, 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern. 3.30:1-ratio gear set. "Strange" brand aluminum carrier housing. Detroit 'True Track' 31-spline Torsen (Torque-Sensing) differential.

IN THE COCKPIT

Leather-wrapped steering wheel. Full instrumentation dash with AutoMeter 'Pro-Comp' Ultra-Lite gauges. Two AEM air/fuel ratio gauges (one in each sidepipe). Kirkey aluminum racing seats, driver & passenger side, with seat covers. Simpson 5-point seatbelt harness for both driver & passenger. Longacre wide-angle rearview mirror.

Chassis, Suspension, Brakes

  • Chassis Particulars: FFR MkII body & frame. Driver & passenger rollbar hoops. The front suspension pickup points have been gusseted for added strength. An "X" member has been added onto the frame underneath the doors on each side. The transmission crossmember has been modified to be removable for easier transmission servicing. The windscreen mounting has been modified to provide a 35° rake.
      
  • Front Suspension: Short long-arm suspension. Factory 5 tubular lower control arms. Factory 5 adjustable upper control arms. "Pro Shocks" brand, coil-over shocks. SN95 spindles with 5x4.5" bolt pattern hubs. Whitby Motorcars SAI modification kit.
     
  • Rear Suspension: custom-designed-and-built 3-link rear suspension with a Panhard bar. Afco coil-over shocks. Adjustable lower control arms. Adjustable 3rd link. Adjustable Panhard bar. The control arms, the 3rd link and the Panhard bar are all made from swaged steel tubing with Heim joints.
     
  • The steering rack mounting has been altered to correct both bump steer & Ackerman geometry.
     
  • Ford Racing M-2300-K brake system: The rear caliper mounting has been modified due to the floater rear hubs. Performance Friction brake pads, #97 compound front & rear. Baer 'Eradispeed' 13" (33 cm) front brake rotors with aluminum hats. The front brakes are air-cooled with ducts forcing air from the front of the car directly to the front brake rotor shields.
     
  • Aerodynamics: front splitter. rear spoiler.

It's built for racing, but is equipped with working headlights, taillights, turn signals and brake lights.

This spirited li'l serpent has served me well over the years. It's very reliable and a sheer joy to drive. I do drive it on the street, have attended many carshows, and I have participated in many local Cobra club cruise events. This bolt of white lightning is as tame on the street as it is wild on the track! You can indeed drive a race car on the street.
