Are you snakebit? Once you are, "authentic and original" become part and parcel of your vocabulary, your reptilian patois. Like the Holy Grail, authenticity becomes an overriding goal. You must decide: do you want a drivin' machine that replicates the original Cobra in every respect, or are you looking for a much less expensive car that sports serpentine coachwork but replicates very little of the originals' aura and performance. The more convincing your car, the more investment dollars and time you'll spend.

For me, I decided to go with a company that produced a replica as close to authentic and original that I could find. After a ton of research and some word-of-mouth recommendations, I ended up at Hi-Tech Motorsports in Scottdale, Arizona.

This black-on-black beauty is an original Tom D'Antonio/Hi-Tech Motorsports 1966 427SC. Considered one of the best replicas ever produced, it is in exceptionally clean and solid concours condition and has had extensive attention paid to minor details (mechanical, cosmetic, and interior). This Cobra's construction was professionally executed using a combination of genuine Shelby and FoMoCo "NOS" (new old stock) components and parts along with other top-name high-performance parts. This car is an exacting duplicate of the Shelby 4000-Series cars, albeit with some custom touches I've since added.

Under the Hood
original Ford 427FE side-oiler

engine photo is hotlinked (same view, MUCH larger size).

  • original cast-iron Ford 427FE sideoiler bored 0.015" over
  • tunnel-wedge V8 intake topped with two Holley 600 cfm carburetors
  • COBRA cast/ribbed aluminum air cleaner
  • NOS medium-riser heads
  • Manley SS (stainless steel) valves
  • Crane springs mounted in Ford spring cups; the retainers and keepers are Crane as well
  • FPP chromoly rocker shafts are used, but with new rockers
  • rocker studs mounts the FPP aluminum rocker shaft stands; oil passages were properly mated
  • Ford LeMans-type connecting rods
  • double-row timing chain drives the Blue Racer hydraulic cam
  • the oil pan sports a Ford windage tray

The engine is tuned for the street and dynoed at 480 hp and 435 ft./lbs. torque. It thrives on premium pump gas. Griffin radiator with a rugged and powerful electric fan assembly keeps this powerplant running consistently cool.

"SEE YA' LATER!" VIEWS

above shot is hotlinked (alternate straight-on rear view, much larger size).

This black reptile provides you with the true aura and persona of a period-correct Cobra including the 4" round-tube chassis that matches that of the original Shelby 427 Cobra. Some terrific (but subtle) modern touches such as the cooling fan setup, 5-speed gearbox (in place of the original's 4-speeder), remote hood and trunk (boot) pulls inside the cockpit render the outside of the car so much "cleaner"

I've spent 13 years driving and refining this Cobra. As far as I can determine, the only thing left to make it any more "original" would be to replace the fiberglass body with an aluminum one—a tradeoff that mandates gaining a little more authenticity for a lot less durability.

You'll get all the documentation and build photos.

This car represents a GREAT opportunity for you if you're seeking a quintessentially "period-correct" Shelby Cobra reproduction. It's an awesome driver, and it's in pristine condition. Over $100,000 invested. As dreams go, this has been a great ride. It's your turn!
