ERA
427 'Street Version' Cobra #565. This Cobra was first built in
2000 by the team of perfectionists at ERA as a 1967 "SC"
(street/competition) model, fully finished as a "turnkey"
factory car. It was later modified by E.R.A. with more
civilized 'Street Version' features (undercar glaspak-muffled
exhaust, chromed bumperettes, glovebox and other 'street-related'
mods).
Here are
some details of this British Racing Green serpentine driving
machine:

powerplant
particulars
This all aluminum
427 side-oiler "FE" block (#172) was acquired directly
from Carroll Shelby, along with a forged billet crankshaft that
raised the displacement to 468 cid (and to 10.5:1 compression);
it's further outfitted with a Comp Cams camshaft, Edelbrock
ported/polished aluminum heads, with oversized Ferrea
valves and needle bearing/fully supported T&D roller
rockers with solid roller lifters and hollow pushrods, and with
support bars fully machined into the heads, Wiseco short
skirt type pistons, and Eagle brand H-beam type connecting
rods.
The rods
are designed with Chevy-style large ends that match the custom
crank to result in reduced wear via lower bearing speeds; the
crank sports fully-housed 6-bolt mains, as the bearing caps are
raised well up in the block for stability; full billet MSD
distributor and 6AL Plus ignition, with fixed timing;
Tilton Super Starter, custom solid-aluminum motor mounts.
The engine
is lowered in the frame and offset 1.5" to the passenger
side for 50/50 weight balance; it was rebuilt less than 4,000
miles ago (4 years ago) by well-respected Ted Wenz at Marcovicci/Wenz
on Long Island coincident with the installation of the Hilborn/Haltech
full 8-port EFI system. It was dyno-tuned and tested (sheets
provided) to produce 596 horsepower/ 600+ ft.lbs.
torque; the motor weighs less than 400 lbs./181 kg.
(vs. 720 lbs./327 kg. for a cast iron 427).
