Factory Five Racing
Wildfire Red Mk3

There's about 300 of those horses lurking under the bonnet (hood).

I dreamt of building and driving a Cobra from when I was a kid watching them race in the '60s. I built plastic, glue-together models of Shelby Cobras, I installed Cobra bodies onto my Scalextric slot cars... you can probably appreciate the obsession.

A work assignment placed me in Massachusetts for a couple of years; this geographic paradigm shift enabled me to make a nuisance of myself to the Factory Five guys in Wareham, Massachusetts. I was so impressed with the FFR business model, the people, their designs and fabrication processes, that I was persuaded that THIS was the Cobra that I was going to build. I was not disappointed.

My friend and I each ordered a kit and we spent happy evenings and weekends in a corner of an old warehouse in Framingham, meticulously building two identical Mk3 roadsters. This process welded our friendship for life. I returned to Arizona in 2006, completed the build and titled the car for the first time in 2007. My friend drives his around upstate New York these days (Empire State weather permitting).

POWERPLANT
Ford 5.0L Cobra small-block V8

engine photo is hotlinked (same view, MUCH larger size).

  • Ford 5.0 Cobra, electronic fuel injected
  • 1994 Cobra intake manifold
  • GT40 heads
  • cool air intake with large-bore Mass Air Flow meter
  • Factory 5 aluminum radiator
  • aftermarket engine and chassis wiring harnesses
  • no smog equipment; the car is registered/titled as a 1965 model

The weight of this serpent is hardly more than 2,000 lbs. (just over 900 kgs.) and thus the roughly 300 wild horses that the 5.0 liter Ford Mustang Cobra powerplant produces, coupled with the 3.55:1 rear end ratio, renders it an awesome, bugs-in-your-teeth drivin' machine.

You can smoke the big 315 tires through the first few gears and get to well over 100 mph before you even have time to save your cap from flying off your head (or reach the end of the freeway on-ramp)—or—you can tour sedately through the neighborhood on Sunday afternoon.

The Ford EFI adds to the response and driveability of this car and keeps gas mileage very wallet-friendly.

It was a joy to build this car. I used only premium/brand-new components (apart from the motor, transmission and gas tank), and everything came together precisely. Factory Five Racing has put major effort into the evolution of their design and their MK3 is testimony to this.

This little asphalt-kicking serpent took me 18 months to build; I completed and licensed it in 2007 (and registered it as a 1965 and therefore does not require emissions tests in most states). Driven 3,500 miles (±5,600 kilometers) since completed.

It is with a heavy heart that I offer this beauty for sale. But my wife and I are relocating to Idaho and we must purchase a home there (and there is no way that we can expect to sell our properties in Arizona at this time).

$37,900 obo
