When the first 427 Cobras were reigning supreme in road racing competition around the world, I was into English sportscars, especially Colin Chapman's Lotus 7 Series of kit racing cars. I eventually built a Lotus 7 Series 4 and campaigned it for 5 years in SCCA 'Solo' racing.

The car was undefeated in each of 4 of those years, amassing more than 40 First Place finishes. Later, when my high school–age son approaching me about once again going Solo racing, we decided to build a 427 Cobra replica. Not just any one, but one that would handle as nimbly as the legendary Lotus 7. We achieved that, and then some.

This serpent delivers superb competitive handling that wins SCCA Solo events, and simultaneously is an excellent road car also. It's very well balanced and responsive. Given my less-than–youthful profile, it was made for the XL driver with extended foot wells and plenty of legroom for my current 6'-3" 250-lb. frame.

This is one of the few cars you can drive to 'Solo' events if you wish, compete, win and then drive home. Its ideal 50/50 weight distribution is due to judicious engine choice, engine placement and extensive use of aluminum components including the power rack & pinion, water pump, et al. It's fast enough to win and tame enough to drive to on the road by even a teenage son.

It was first registered on 9 September, 1997; now it's nearing
the 'magic' 15-year age qualification for import into Canada.

UNDER THE HOOD
351 Windsor V8

powerplant photo is hotlinked (same view, MUCH larger size).

This well-built Windsor-based powerplant is outfitted with:

  • Edelbrock 'Performer RPM' heads [flowed & ported with oversize 2.02" valves ]
  • Edelbrock 'Performer' manifold
  • Mighty Demon carburetor with K&N filter (the Ford Cobra air filter is also available)
  • Comp Cams [FW 292H-10 grind] camshaft
  • high-output oil pump, remote high-capacity filter and oil cooler
  • Milodon road-race oil pan with traps, baffles & windage tray
  • aluminum high-output water pump and a Griffin custom high-capacity cross-flow radiator
  • MSD billet distributor and 6AL ignition module
  • SS braided lines on all critical fluids
  • full engine and suspension refresh within last 200 miles (since the complete 'refresh' of the engine and suspension, it has logged no SCCA 'Solo' track miles).

GEARTRAIN

  • heavy-duty 10" Kevlar/button clutch
  • Borg Warner "World Class" T-5 gearbox
  • Ford 8.8" [3.55 ratio] limited-slip rear end

COCKPIT

above cockpit shot is hotlinked (same view, MUCH larger size).

  • Cockpit is authentically outfitted with:
  • Grant hardwood-rimmed steering wheel
  • Ididit adjustable steering column
  • gauges: two complete sets: Borg Warner (installed) and Smiths Instruments gauges (in reserve)
  • B&M adjustable shifter
  • premium leather seats, doors & dash to match the racing stripes
  • air conditioning and windshield de-misting available
  • cruise control and backup lights
  • electric door latches
  • all-new carpets

CUSTOM HARD TOP

SUSPENSION, BRAKES, ROLLING STOCK

  • weight (measured): 2,720 lb. (1,234 kg) ready to run with 50/50 weight distribution
  • rear suspension: Urbine Performance custom/tunable 3-link with panhard bar; similar to the latest Ford Mustang components
  • front suspension: adjustable, tube style upper & lower A-arms
  • Flaming River variable boost power rack & pinion.
  • front & rear heavy-duty swaybars
  • shocks: HAL Proma/Stocker Star, 12-step adjustable
  • brakes: 4-wheel disc, with adjustable proportioning valve
  • street wheels: PS Engineering (aluminum) 15" (front: 7-1/2", rear: 9-1/2"), shod with BF Goodrich T/A Radials

The blue beauty handles extremely well on the track, yet is just the same fully street-legal. You can tune the suspension from competition firm to comfortable cruising in minutes.

The front & rear suspensions are quickly adjustable for ride height and shock rate. You can change the rear springs in less than 15 minutes if you desire different spring rates, but I've never deemed that to be necessary.

This in-your-face frontal view is hotlinked (same view, MUCH larger size).

This serpent has never lost to another Cobra or Cobra replica including Factory Fives and Superformances in the 7 years it competed in SCCA 'Solo' events. It has captured first place in a number of classes in Regional and Divisional SCCA Autocrosses throughout Indiana and Ohio, in Street Mod 2, B-Prepared and E-Mod classes.

Recent 3-link suspension and shock upgrades have further improved the handling; moreover, the very recent addition of the variable-assist power steering has further improved both its street and track performance, easing driver effort under all circumstances.

The competition rims are 16"x8". There is sufficient clearance to accommodate 10" front and 12" rear, although I've been running 8.5" Kumo Autocrossers on all four corners with excellent results [in large part due to its excellent 50/50 weight distribution].

4 February, 2012: You can mark my Nassau Blue Classic Roadsters Cobra SOLD... and in just over 2 weeks on Cobra Country! Thanks for all of your guidance with my photography. Those pictures got rave reviews from everyone who called. Several asked 'Does it really look that good?' When the buyer saw it the first time he said "The pictures are awesome...  the car is even prettier!" Ironically it went to a fellow serpent enthusiast within 25 miles of where I live! Casey Kroll
