Lola T70
Original Lola T70-bodied McKee Mk3

This car was originally commissioned by the Shelby American Race Team headed by Carroll Shelby for driver (and my fellow Ohioan, the late/great) Bob Johnson to compete in the USRRC series in 1964. It was designed and built by Bob McKee under his own name and is the third chassis McKee built under his own name. The chassis was built to accept small- and big-block engines, as well as the 4-cam Indy car engine.

The original body was an open-cockpit aluminum affair. That body was quickly shunted and Dan Gurney gave them his Lotus 19's nose to be fitted as a replacement. The car raced with this nose throughout the rest of the '60s with varying livery and modifications, before being fitted with the closed-cockpit Lola T70 Mk3 body that it retains today. The car was also owned and raced by Dan Gerber and was called 'The Gerber Payne Special.' The car raced with both small-block Ford and Chevrolet engines.

You get 50+ historical photographs from its beginning when it was a chassis (being welded by Bob McKee), all of its body iterations, through to its current state. The original blueprints are available from Bob McKee as well. Also, an automotive historian is writing a book on significant '60s racing cars and he's dedicating an entire chapter to this very car. A preview of his coverage of this car is available to serious buyers.

 drivetrain particulars

The car is fitted with a period-correct 480 horsepower small-block Chevy as last raced. It has a 4-speed syncromesh McKee transaxle (uses Ford ring & pinion), ZF limited-slip differential, Chevrolet T-10 gears, and Halibrand quick-change gears which are all strong, reliable, and inexpensive to replace. You get seven quick-change gear sets for a total of 14 different ratios. The uprights are prototype-Corvette-based. It uses Corvette vented brakes in the front and Mustang in the rear.

Keep in mind this car was built before 1964; this stuff came from the factory's backdoor racing program. The car also includes original GM prototype brake calipers with part numbers that start with 'X.' All suspension parts were crack-tested as was the chassis during the 2008 restoration.

It's equipped with a dry-cell battery, an alternator (so that you can drive it on the street), a 10-lb. onboard halon fire extinguishing system, and a 15-gallon (57-litre) fuel cell.

This Lola/McKee is a bona fide historical racing machine with a compelling history. It's eligible to vintage race anywhere, gets invited to Invitation-Only concours, and you can drive it on the street. It is strong, safe, fast, inexpensive to maintain, and exceptionally beautiful. I've it priced for immediate sale, and (as a dedicated collector) I will consider worthwhile 'partial trades.'

Price upon request.
