On this day in 1835 (a Sunday): Alexander Webb was born. Webb was a career U.S. Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War who received the Medal of Honor for gallantry at The Battle of Gettysburg. On July 3, Webb’s brigade happened to be positioned in the center of the Union line to defend against Pickett’s Charge, directly in front of the famous “copse of trees,” which (as it happened) became the Confederate artillerists primary aiming point. As the Confederates launched a massive artillery barrage to prepare for their infantry assault, Webb made himself conspicuous to his men, many of whom were unfamiliar with their new commander. Although his men shouted at him to take shelter, he refused and impressed them with his personal bravery… and his brigade held the line. After the war, Webb was a prominent member of New York Society and served as president of the City College of New York for thirty-three years. Coda: Alexander Stewart Webb. Born in NYC on February 15, 1835; graduate of USMA/West Point (1855), served with distinction throughout the Civil War; died at age 75 in Riverdale, Bronx, New York on February 12, 1911, 3 days short of his 76th birthday. Interred at West Point. Bronze statue of Gen. Webb on CCNY campus and at “the copse of trees” at Gettysburg. In Ted Turner’s epic war film “Gettysburg” (1993) Brig.Gen. Webb was portrayed by Civil War historian Brian Pohanka. [StrategyPage.com & Wiki]
