2019 Backdraft RT4 Cobra replica bought new from Backdraft Racing in Boynton Beach, Florida on December 18, 2019. Special order build in Grigio Silverstone Metallic Gray (Ferrari color code#740) and black leather upholstery in classic Roadster styling—that is to say, minimal livery and with undercar muffled exhaust, sans sidepipes and with chromed bumper hoop in front, and bumperettes front & rear.

SS (stainless steel) rollbar, hoodscoop, and custom under-car exhaust system with mufflers & resonators. The rear of the car is IRS (Independent Rear Suspension ) with a Ford 8.8” housing and 3.55:1 ring & pinion. It’s also outfitted with power steering. It’s fully sorted and a dazzling and reliable driver.

I’m on my second set of Nitto tires, the NT05s wore out at 3,900 miles, and were replaced with Nitto NT555G2 rubber that has lots of wear left, as you can see above…

Currently (July, 2024) this phantom of the motorways has logged 8,451 miles [13,600 km] on the odometer; it boasts a clean California Title with the coveted and all-important SB-100 Smog Exemption Certificate.

Power is provided via a Ford Performance Generation 2,  5.0L Coyote engine; it’s all stock but for the K&N air filter with carbon fiber intake, and the custom exhaust.

The Chassis Dyno Tuning now shows 421 horsepower and 391 max torque at the rear wheels.

—Gear Train—

I replaced the clutch master cylinder that wore out prematurely due to the poor pedal/pushrod alignment from Backdraft. The alignment issue was corrected and the new master cylinder works great & no leaks.

Last summer I replaced the trans fluid with new Tremec High-Performance manual trans fluid. Up & down shifting is much smoother for the Tremec TKO 500 five-speed gearbox. 80 mph in 5th gear is approx. 2,300 RPM.

Tinted/folding sun visors. The stock headlights, RayDyot rearview mirror, and round backup light are all included. Stock shift lever is included (I added a custom bent Hurst vintage-look handle ) to move the shift ball forward in the car.

Tonneau or not tonneau
That is the question…

Black vinyl convertible top with removable side curtain windows, and a black vinyl tonneau cockpit cover are included. There is an heater with a blower motor ducted to both the driver & passenger. And for the really chilly mornings, there are heated seats with Hi/Low.

There is no radio or sound system, and no air conditioning.

I have added a few things to the stock Backdraft serpent over the years— lighter front coils to get a better ride quality (went from 550 lb. springs down to 500 lb. Eibach springs) waaaay better. Added Delta LED headlights for much better night driving. Added Vleds.com super bright backup light along the bottom edge of license plate, along with Vleds interior footwell and trunk LED lights, the switch is at bottom of dash, left of steering wheel. Installed two DreamCarCompany.com billet rearview mirrors that look great and actually work to see what’s behind you.

There is Mastershield Xpel Ultimate film on the nose of the car, on both door tops where your arm rests, and the front of both rear wheel fenders.

The stock mufflers were too loud and restrictive, so I replaced them with Borla ProXS mufflers and X-pipe. Now quieter when cruising, but loud and revs much easier when you stand on it.

shot of my (late) dad and me taking one of our excursions in 2019. Great fun!

Above (December, 2019): That’s my late dad (Dick Miller)…
during his last sortie in my Cobra.

In the last 4-1/2 years, it has been deployed around town, cruise nights, car shows, and several trips to Los Angeles, San Diego (both over 100 miles one-way) and recently a journey to Prescott Arizona (400 miles one-way ) for a few days. No hiccups, always starts & runs, gets lots of attention, and can get 20 mpg on trips… your mileage will vary depending on the weight of your right foot.
