Contemporary Classic Motor Car Company (CCMCC) was established by Peter Bayer and Monty Gatti in Mamaroneck, New York in 1978… only a few years after the last original Shelby 427 Cobra was delivered. Contemporary was one of the earliest of the Cobra replicas, and for a generation this premium production was widely considered to be the Cobra replica of choice among staunch Cobra aficionados.

Of particular merit was their one-piece high-impact, reinforced handlaid fiberglass coachwork. The Contemporary body was virtually indistinguishable from the Shelby 427 body as they were struck directly from Peter Bayer’s original 1965 Shelby 427SC Cobra purchased from Shelby American on 23 February, 1965, work order#15103. Peter’s 1965 Cobra was one of the earliest 427 Cobras to be produced for Shelby American. This Contemporary reproduction was produced in 1988.

Moreover, Contemporary’s rigid round-tube chassis closely resembles the original Shelby chassis. Thus the combination of spot-on faithfulness (to the original) of the coachwork, plus the round-tube chassis, the Jag/Salisbury IRS setup and the extensive aluminum paneling in the engine compartment and the boot (trunk) has for over forty years rendered the CCMCC Cobra one of the most convincing Cobra replicas on the market. And today a Contemporary such as this one typically displays some of the coveted patina of the originals. One can readily be forgiven for assuming this Rangoon Red road rocket is a Shelby original track star of the 1960s…

Contemporary stamped the firewall plate (shown directly below) its Mfr. ID# [CCX-3-3329]. Its vehicle ID# as displayed on the Title is DR141465MO. The license plate is number 3CVL623.

This Cobra boasts high-performance twin 4-barrel Holley carburetors atop a medium-riser manifold and ribbed aluminum valve covers inscribed “Cobra LeMans” on one and “Cobra 427” on the other.

This scarlet beauty is loaded with the finest of high-end componentry, but I’m not well versed on those specifics. You will no doubt notice many of these premium components in these photos, even though I didn’t attempt to list them all in this narrative.

If you’re looking for a 427 Cobra that’s a dead-ringer (both aesthetically and from the standpoint of breathtaking performance) for Shelby’s serpentine musclecar, this drivin’ machine should be a top contender on your short list.

This reptilian hot rod is in virtually pristine condition with only 4,300 original miles [6,920 km] logged. It has been driven only 600 miles since the time of purchase in 1995 from a private party. It has never been raced and you get its complete records including the most current service done by Penzer Auto Concepts on 6 April, 2021.

It is California legal and does not require a smog certificate; it’s registered and titled as a 1965 Ford with current tags.
