In 2003, after several years of scrutinizing the better Cobra replicas, a friend of mine from Austin phoned and advised me that he had decided to create a near-exact Cobra replica… one that Cobra purists would admire and appreciate. Indeed, he would name his company “Exact Systems.”

After several discussions he said he intended to design and employ a composited carbon fiber/Dupont Kevlar body for his custom handcrafted reproduction.

Knowing his extensive abilities I concluded that this was my best chance to own a Cobra.  So I sent him a big deposit for the first one off the line… knowing it would be several years in the making.

He started out by acquiring a top-notch 427 Cobra body to produce a body buck from… and after carefully measuring and adjusting his jig for the frame to be spot-on correct he built a buck for the body… After two tries at the correct carbon fiber–to-Kevlar ratio we arrived at the optimum number of plies each for the bodies; the end result is a robust skin that is almost precisely as lightweight as an aluminum skin—but much stronger and much more dent-resistant. We then built 3 bodies for the first 3 cars… we sent one car off to a paint shop we had used before and sent the next two bodies to a small custom shop outside of Austin. They all came out magnificent… when painted we brought them back to Austin for assembly. All the other parts had been produced and were ready for final assembly prior to the return of the freshly-painted bodies.

We assembled the three Cobras together to correct (on all three) any errors we encountered; when completed each of the three cars was far better than our highest expectations… I had (and have) no issues at all. I’m still pleased as punch that we invested the time to get it all spot-on correct!

I’m quite confident that the coachwork on my Cobra (and the other two that we collaborated on) is as close to perfect as on any Cobra or Cobra replica ever produced since the very first one was completed at Auto Carriers (AC) in Great Britain all those years ago.
