Here’s where the (Cobra) Saga begins
[Curt Scott relates the anecdote below]

“I had a marvelous conversation with an original Shelby (289) Cobra owner (Mike Dooley… wellzi remember) and competition driver at the track in Maple Grove, Pennsylvania in the late 1980s. He had owned and driven and raced an original 4-cylinder/2.6L Austin-Healey 100… the original “Big Healey.” A few years later he traded it for his next “Big Healey,” a 3000 model with its 2.9L inline six. He always wished those sports cars had a small-displacement V8 powerplant.

He said his fantasy in effect came true when the original AC (and Shelby) Cobras swaggered onto the world stage in 1962. Fitted with a Ford small-block 289 cid V8, it was about as close to a “Big Healey” with a V8 that he could wish for… a true British sports machine fitted with a high-performance American small-block V8 powerplant. He purchased his first (pre-owned) AC Cobra in 1964. As he put it, that was the same year the James Bond was handily whipping his Aston Martin DB5 around England’s motorways and byways in that year’s 007 big-screen blockbuster hit “Goldfinger.” And it was the same year the those little 289 Cobras were thrashing Enzo’s Team drivers at FIA tracks all around the world, from Mille Miglia to Nürburgring to The Argentine GP to LeMans.” CS

Hey Little Cobra

It was indeed the small-block Cobras [289 slabsides, 289 USRRCs and 289 FIAs] and Peter Brock’s Daytona Coupes that wrenched the WMC (World Manufacturers Championship) from Enzo Ferrari’s grasp in early 1965 (for the FIA’s 1964 racing season).

And it was the 289 Cobras that The Rip Chords [Phil Stewart, Arnie Marcus, Rich Rotkin and Bernie Bringas, all from southern California] paid tribute to and made famous (indeed, Top 10 roster) in the summer of 1963. And here’s the original ‘Hey Little Cobra ’ just for you, in audio/visual form, courtesy of (Gasholes.com’s) Aytac “Turk” Ercen, and of course YouTube.com. The audio gets lively, so be sure to adjust your sound volume [and perhaps bypass any commercial you may encounter on YouTube].

Enjoy!

The photos you see of this li’l green drivin' machine on this page were captured by none other than Chris Lyzcen of Piston Ring Media [in Jersey City, New Jersey… using his Fujifilm X-H2S digital camera with its standard 16–55mm lens]. I think you'll agree that any moto photographer would turn GREEN with envy after encountering Chris’ masterly capture of the rich, emerald hue of this 289 Cobra. CS
