Superformance MkII
289 ‘Street’ Cobra, SPS0023

Wimbledon White/red leather

  The small-block drivin’ machine
that put the asp onto the asphalt…

Click on the photo above to see it at a much larger size.

This iconic true sportscar is powered by a Roush small-block V8 mated to a Tremec 5-speed manual gearbox and is finished in Wimbledon White and red leather upholstery. Licensed by Carroll Shelby.

Think of it as an Austin-Healey 3000 loaded with
a high-performance Ford small-block V8.

Equipment includes 15″ true knockoff chromed wire wheels, Wilwood disc brakes, a hardwood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel, Stewart Warner blackfaced instrumentation, a limited-slip differential, an Edelbrock intake manifold, Holley carburetor, MSD ignition components, and an aluminum radiator.

The photographs you see on this page as accurately as possible reflect the way you’d see this sweet drivin’ machine in person. You see, my moto-photographer friend Martin Bydalek made every effort to capture this WimWhite beauty in all its majesty.

It was indeed the small-block Cobras (289 slabsides, 289 USRRCs and 289 FIAs) and Peter Brock’s Daytona Coupes that wrenched the WMC (World Manufacturers Championship) from Enzo Ferrari’s grasp in 1965 (for the 1964 racing season). And it was the 289 Cobras that The Rip Chords [Phil Stewart, Arnie Marcus, Rich Rotkin and Bernie Bringas, all from southern California] made famous (indeed, Top 10) in the summer of 1963. And here’s the original ‘Hey Little Cobra’ just for you, in audio/visual form, courtesy of (Gasholes.com’s) Aytac “Turk” Ercen, and of course YouTube.com. The audio gets lively, so be sure to adjust your sound volume [and perhaps bypass any commercial you may encounter on YouTube]. Enjoy!

The cockpit in this iconic road reptile is outfitted with:

The cockpit is fitted with fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in red leather upholstery that is also on the dashboard and door panels. Color-coordinated carpets line the footwells. Additional appointments include an analog clock, AC-branded cast-aluminum pedals, a lockable glove compartment, heater & defroster, and a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror.

The hardwood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel boasts a Cobra-branded horn button and (period-correct) blackfaced Stewart Warner instrumentation consisting of a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, oil temperature, coolant temperature, battery voltage, and fuel level. The 5-digit mechanical odometer currently displays 1,859 miles (3,000 km), all of which have been logged under the original one owner.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Tremec 5-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip reproduction Salisbury differential.

—Chassis, Suspension, Brakes—

The steel-reinforced slabside fiberglass body is finished in Wimbledon White and mounted to a Tojeiro-style 3″ steel round-tube chassis. Exterior details include fender vents, windshield wipers, windwings, a bullet-style side mirror, a LeMans-style fuel filler, dual exhaust outlets in the rear, and chromed bumperettes with tube guards. Those chromed 15″ knockoff wire wheels are fitted with 205/65 Firestone Precision Touring rubber. The scene-interrupting critter is ‘Remington.’ He’s a Walker Tree Coonhound and Shepherd mix. Fantastic li’l bugger, but he’s his own dawg. Here you see him insisting that time’s-a-wastin’ to play fetch; he just dropped the ball to remind me.
